WHERE DO I START?

Some basics of witchcraft.

It can be daunting when you are first starting your journey. Google "beginner witchcraft" and thousands of sites pop up. Our first suggestion is to write down what you are passionate about. Is it plants and herbs? Animals? History? Gods and Goddesses? Do you want to learn in a more structured environment - then Wicca may be a place to start. Take a look at our list of types of witches this could give you some guidance. Every path is so personal, starting means you need to identify what is the best fit for you.

Then do some foundation work - we will not tell you here where to go or who to read, you need to do a bit of research to guide your personal practice. Research from many sources until you notice a thread of information that is the same - this will become your source. Of course, you are welcome to reach out to our online coven and ask as many questions as you need.

Learn basic magical theory.

Time to get some basics on grounding, protection, creating a circle, what happens when you cast a spell, what are correspondences work. Check out our blogs on the basics.

Protection and Cleansing.

These are two of the most important things you should learn in magick. No matter what path you go down or what type of magic you end up doing, you should know how to do these efficiently and effectively. They are easy to learn. Cleanse your space, yourself, that object or tool, your family. Then protect them. Learn how to set up wards, shields and circles.

Working with Energy.

You know this, you have already felt the energy around you, now is the time to understand how you can use this energy, interact with it to fix gaps in your wards and shields, project your intent into things, etc. Energy work is easy and always available no matter where you are, it requires no materials besides your body, and is extremely versatile. Most paths require a base-level understanding of how energy works.

Divination.

Start simple maybe a pendulum. You may not always be able to ask questions of other witches, so now is a great time to connect with spirit/goddess/god/universe or your chosen deity. Practicing divination hones your intuition and connection and helps you avoid dependency on others.

Other stuff.

Local folklore, mythology, and types of spirits/Goddesses/Deities. You may not want to work with them, but sometimes they want to work with you! It's good to have an idea of what to do if they pop up. Herbal lore and plants that are available in your area? What‘s edible? What can be used in healing/spells/offerings? It's also important to know what plants are NOT edible in your area or are poisonous.
