Protection

Witches understand that to practice witchcraft means to tap into and direct energy toward an intention. Words have power and thoughts are not idle. Emotion has energy with attributes that can be directed toward yourself or from yourself towards others. There are also, spirit beings and elemental forces that we may or may not work with that are part of the unseen world, where magick takes shape and interacts. Not all of these spirits/beings/elemental forces are helpful or friendly. For these and other reasons, protection magick should be a part of any Witches practice.

What is protection magick?

In essence protection magick is used for self-preservation and/or the safeguarding of others. It looks after one’s holistic wellbeing. It can be proactive such as creating amulets, talismans or using crystals, herbs etc., or it can be the intentional setting of energetic or spiritual barriers around yourself, property, family, etc.

Protection magick can also be reactive. Spellcraft to banish/bind an individual or situation causing harm. There may be a need to cleanse/uncross if you feel that a hex or curse has been thrown their way.

Practicing witchcraft without a working knowledge of how to be protected can be dangerous. As witches we open ourselves to forces of nature, spirit, and the universe. We learn how to bend and shape reality to our will. But we must be wise to keep some things in mind:

• When you open yourself to spiritual realms you may attract unwanted attention that will need to be removed.

• You can pick up unintentional negative energy from a person, place, or object. Negative energy tends to be “sticky,” with the potential to adversely affect your life, family, work, witchcraft or magickal practice if allowed to remain.

• Not all Witches believe in the same ethics that you might (e.g. the three-fold law) Witches practise different types of magick and it doesn’t come with a rulebook. Some witches practise dark/grey magick and not care about any karma or “returns.”
